Fighting for Michael's Freedom in the Era of Coronavirus

In the midst of an unprecedented global pandemic, Equal Justice Under Law continues its mission to fight for the most vulnerable members of society.

On Friday, Equal Justice Under Law filed a motion for the release of Michael under the First Step Act, a 2018 federal law meant to be, as the name implies, a first step towards correcting the racist laws of the War on Drugs by providing many with an opportunity for resentencing.

Michael was sentenced to life in prison in 1993 for a nonviolent, low-level drug offense during the height of the War on Drugs. Michael is 51 years old and has been incarcerated for more than half of his life: 27 years. The injustice of his sentence has now been heightened by the threat that COVID-19 poses to all inmates – especially older inmates like Michael.

Equal Justice Under Law will pursue every possible legal avenue to free Michael. Join us in the fight for freedom by becoming a Champion of Justice today.
