Alex Walheim is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Government, his Master of Public Affairs degree from the LBJ School of Public Affairs, and his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law. In law school, Alex was a member of the Civil Rights Clinic, where he helped a local attorney with cases involving housing, employment discrimination, and jail conditions, and he also worked with the Transnational Workers’ Rights Clinic, where he assisted migrant workers seeking to recover stolen wages from their employers. For three years, Alex served as the president of Texas embrACE, a UT organization serving LGBTQ+ university students. Before joining Equal Justice Under Law, Alex interned with the Texas Indigent Defense Commission, Disability Rights Texas, and Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas.

Alex’s current legal focus is civil rights and public interest law. In May 2026, Alex was selected by the University of Texas School of Law to be a William Wayne Justice Center Fellow. As part of his fellowship, Alex’s work at Equal Justice Under Law will be centered around protecting the Sixth Amendment Rights of criminal defendants to seek court-appointed counsel and a jury trial without the improper imposition of fees.

In his free time, Alex enjoys going to music festivals, riding rollercoasters, and watching Texas Longhorns football games.
